RMB Cards to Fully Open by 2006

On January 10, China UnionPay (CUP) officially launched the operation of
the CUP RMB cards in South Korea, Thailand and Singapore. RMB bankcards,
issued by national banks and bearing the CUP logo, will be valid at
Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and Points of Sale (POS) with the CUP
logo in these countries. This is considered the first time that CUP cards
were truly launched abroad. Prior to this, CUP RMB cards officially
started operations in Hong Kong and Macau on January 18, 2004 and
September 8, 2004 respectively.

China's central bank has announced the business of RMB bank cards will be

The People's Bank of China says it will draft the relevant regulations to
prepare for the establishment of an international operating network of
RMB cards.
At present, RMB cards can be used in Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and
China's Hong Kong and Macao regions.
