Uh, no.

There's a nice long list of free (mostly, at least) software tools for audio analysis, etc, on
that site here.

Actually if you ever hear a bunch of teenagers slurring back and forth at each other, you can
sometimes get the impression that all of Mandarin's sounds are falling into disuse and a new
language based entirely on minor variations on the schwa is evolving. But again, that would be a
bit of a leap

I'm not sure that was really necessary. If you think the guy's wrong it might be better to say so
and ideally explain why. There's a difference between mistaken and presumptuous, one being a
natural consequence of learning, the other a personality defect.

Hero Doug -

You know the fact that you guys notice the younger generation isn't using tones or slurring the
language is far from a leap. If that's what you see that's what you see. The only thing that may
be a leap is applying it country wide. At the very least it's an eye opener that you can't just go
out and learn Marandarin from anyone (at least pronunciation) as they might very well have a poor
accent.

xianu -

Tones are always there, but, I think as the audio software showed, not all the tones are given
equal value, and only certain ones are actually stressed. Many end up in a sort of fuzzy neutral
or sort of mini-tone zone. I remember a friend of mine, who we used to call a tone nazi, was
speaking with some chinese friends. Something extraordinary happened, and the girls said,
"不可能" but the tones were very obvious bu4, ke5 and then the neng went something like 2-3-4.
She asked “那是设么声调?” they just looked at her blankly. point is, once people speak
at regular speed, not all tones get their full value. Often one of the things Chinese always say
about foreign accents is that the laowai always sound like they are singing, probably bc learners
spend so much time pronouncing and making sure the tones are correct.

Hero Doug -

You know I was thinking about mentioning fluent speech and proper speech. To anyone who pay's
attention to language (their own, other's they know well, etc) they'll notice that in fluent
speech we often don't say words/phrases how their supposed to be said.

As xianu said, this most likely happens with tones.

And as lao daiwei and Roddy said, maybe the younger generation is lazier then the older generation
with regards to tones. I'm sure you've seen the jokes in the media of a teenager talking to their
parents and their parents saying "what the hell is he talking about? I don't get these kid's
nowadays". (slang and whatnot)

No reason something similar can't happen here.

carlo -

Pitch tracks only show an intonation contour. Tone shapes are 'embedded' within this contour, just
like lines drawn on an elastic rubber band that is stretched and deformed. So you shouldn't expect
to be able to see regular and immediately recognizable tone shapes there.

If the duration of a syllable is shortened, for example, the pitch variation will be smaller,
because you have no time to do a full glide. That is true of any language, not just Chinese, but
you wouldn't conclude from this that stress in English is disappearing too.

Personally I think when you are learning you should first practice with individual sounds and full
tones, and then learn to string them together in a way that sounds natural. It's a bit like
playing tennis, it's not that you always have to hit your smash with perfect footwork and full
power, but you train that way, so that it's easier to adapt to more complex real game situations.

bomaci -

Actually tones get reduced much more than the text books tells us. I am starting to think that
mandarin has much more sandhi than text books says. Listen to this example sentence. This is a
host at 新浪聊天室 saying the following sentence:
"为什么会拿这样的一个题材来做情景喜剧,是不是特有生活感悟?". I have also
slowed down the 题材来做情景 part.
Listen to how almost all the tones have been flattened out.

Re: NPCR Books 2+3 - Texts only - Editing Help needed...

====================================================================================================

Awesome! Thanks again Skylee. Hopefully that's most of the errors... They've all been fixed, and
I'm about to upload a new version of each.

One note: line 3 - 哪里,哪里 is what my textbook gives for the traditional version, so I'm
going to stick with that for now.

To be honest, I'm surprised there were so few errors with the traditional version of book 2, as I
used Google to translate it from the Simplified Version. I guess that means Google is pretty good?
Most of errors were OCR errors, rather than translation errors.

Anyway, thanks for that. If someone else could have a look through and see if they can spot any
errors, that'd be great. Once someone has looked through and confirmed there's no more errors,
I'll format them slightly more nicely (as .doc files or .pdf files).

Military ties deepened as top general visits US

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-17 10:09:28

(Source: Xinhua)

July 17 - Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of China's Central Military
Commission (CMC), left Beijing Sunday evening for a visit to the United
States, the latest sign of closer ties between the two armed forces.
Invited by U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Guo is the
highest-ranking military officer to visit the United States since 2001.
Guo ranks the second to Chairman Hu Jintao in the 11-member CMC,China's
top military authority.
China-U.S. military ties were broken off in 2001 when a Chinesefighter
aircraft was damaged by a U.S. surveillance plane over theSouth China Sea.
Guo's visit comes when China-U.S. military relations are "at the best
since 2001," said Qian Lihua, deputy director of Foreign Affairs Office
of Chinese Defense Ministry.
Qian said Guo's U.S. visit is "the most important Chinese military
exchange with another country this year."
During his stay in Washington, Guo is scheduled to hold talks with
Rumsfeld on a wide range of issues, including international and regional
security, and China-U.S. military ties. He will also meet with other
members of the U.S. administration.
In addition, the week-long U.S. visit will take Guo to U.S. military
bases and institutions.
Analysts say cooperative agreements on specific fields might come out of
Guo's U.S. visit.
"Guo's visit will help promote China-U.S. strategic trust on traditional
security, and expand cooperation on non-traditional security fields,"
said Yang Yi, director of Institute for Strategic Studies at the National
Defense University of China.
Among Guo's entourage are Political Commissar of Chinese People's
Liberation Army (PLA) Nanjing Military Area Command Lei Mingqiu, Deputy
Commander of PLA Navy Zhao Xingfa, Deputy Commander of PLA Air Force Liu
Chengjun, and Chief of Staff of PLASecond Artillery Force Yu Jixun.
Guo's visit is part of the growing high-level visits between Chinese and
U.S. armed forces over the past years.
Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan and PLA Chief of Staff Liang
Guanglie visited the United States respectively in 2003 and 2004.
Last October, Rumsfeld paid an official visit to China, his first since
taking office in 2001. During his stay in Beijing, Rumsfeld visited the
PLA Second Artillery Force, which was for thefirst time opened to a
foreign military leader.
William Fallon, commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, paid two visits
to China in September 2005 and May 2006.
Fallon also invited a Chinese delegation to observe a U.S. military
exercise in Guam in June, the first invitation of its kind extended by
the United States.
An exchange mechanism of multi-level officers between the two armed
forces are in place. Military institutions in China and the United States
have regular exchange programs.
The defense departments of the two countries have restored a series of
consultation mechanism on maritime security, humanitarian disaster relief
and military environmental protection.
Last month, a U.S. delegation, headed by Assistant Defense Secretary
Peter Rodman, came to Beijing for the eighth annual round of defense
consultation.
"Both sides had a number of specific ideas of new areas of cooperation or
new activities," Rodman said after the consultation.
Also last month, the flagship of U.S. Navy's Pacific fleet "Blue Ridge"
paid its fourth visit to China's economic hub Shanghai, highlighting
warming exchanges between the two navies.
However, officials with Chinese Defense Ministry said there remain some
"obstacles" preventing China-U.S. military ties from going forward, such
as the long-standing Taiwan issue and U.S. strategic distrust for China.
The U.S. congress passed some bills limiting military exchangeswith
China, as represented by the 2000 Fiscal Year Defense Authorization Act.
"From an overall point of view, positive factors in China-U.S, military
ties outweigh negative ones," said Qian, the official with Chinese
Defense Ministry.

Beijing more suitable for investing in than inhabiting

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-04 16:57:51

Chinanews, Beijing, July 4 C A recent poll carried out by the Chinese
Academy of Social Sciences showed that in Beijings city construction
not enough attention has been paid to the needs of low-income earners.
Some sociologists pointed out that several measures had begun to cause
practical harm.
At the beginning of last year, the Beijing municipal government proposed
to build Beijing as an habitable city. The proposal was widely praised by
the general public. Since then, Beijing had devoted much effort and money
to its city construction improvement. However, little achievement has
been made. In fact, the citys habitability has even fallen back
compared with last year.
In December 2005, the Business Weekly magazine and the Horizon Research
Consultancy Group jointly published a list on Chinese cities
habitability degree in 2005. The list showed that Beijings habitability
ranking had dropped from the third position in 2004 to the 15th.
On June 6, 2006, the Horizon Research Consultancy Group selected 20
cities in China and published a list on their favorability degree for
making investment. The list showed that Beijing ranked first on the list.
However, in another list published by the same company on a citys
habitability, Beijing came 19th , or second from bottom.
On June 22, Professor Zhang Wenzhong from the Geosciences and Resources
Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences led a research team
to conduct a questionnaire investigation among more than 11,000 people.
The poll result concludes that Beijings habitability has dropped to
63.8 points, just passing the qualified mark.
By analyzing the poll result, researchers found that people earning a
monthly income of over 10,000 yuan was most satisfied with the citys
habitability, while families earning 3,000 yuan or less were most
unsatisfied with the citys habitability.
Regarding the correlation between peoples sense of habitability and
their monthly income, researchers explained that at present, Beijings
city construction work had not provided much convenience to low-income
earners. This had caused a negative impact on their living quality that
covered nearly every aspect of their life, including daily life,
transportation, safety issue, health and comfort.

Chinese bloggers busy protecting their IPR

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-22 15:03:43

Chinanews, June 22 - Chinese bloggers that arouse society's increasing
scrutiny are creating a wave to protect their intellectual property right
(IPR). Many protest that other people constantly infringe upon their IPR.
Not long ago, a female blogger in China sued a famous website for
reproducing her article without her permission and asked for a
compensation of 100,000 yuan (US$12,500). At present there are more than
60 million blog users and readers in China, and essays on many renowned
blogs are warmly welcome by readers.
This female blogger's action stirred up a wave of IPR protectionist
sentiments among Chinese bloggers. In Changsha, capital city of China's
Hunan Province, many a well-known blogger host a salon of "IPR
protection" and call for authorities to "severely crack down on IPR
infringement".
Blogger Wang Xiaofeng, who became famous for his blog "the massage
breast", said that a certain newspaper has copied his column for half a
year while he knew nothing about that. He discovered that all the
contents on the "column" were copied from his blog.
Another blogger complained that his article was published on 50
newspapers, of which only three sent him his remuneration. The remaining
47 did not even call him.
Bloggers stated that they were not opposed to the press publishing or
editing their work, just that the press should ask for their permission
and then pay the author's remuneration. "We do not know the author or
his/her contact details" should not be used as excuses to steal their
articles.
Nonetheless, they do not agree with the above-mentioned female blogger's
courageous action to bring the case to court. "We have no way out though
we know our rights have been infringed upon, because it costs too much to
protect IPR, and time and energy consumed in a lawsuit are not
commensurate with any possible legal compensation," said a blogger.

Beijing to build ecological passage for Scientific Olympics

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-12 15:56:44

Chinanews, Jun 12 - Two years from now, the Olympic Forest Park that
covers a land of 680 hectares will spring up in the north of Beijing
city. The Fifth Ring Road will cross the park and divide it into two
parts. The north part is planned to be natural intensified forests, while
the south will be an ecological forest garden. The ecological passage
stretching over the Fifth Ring Road will link the two parts. This passage
will become the largest one in Chinese mainland. It will be 200 meters
long and 60-120 meters wide. Different kinds of trees and shrubs will be
planted in the passage, which can create a natural environment suitable
for insects and small animals to live in. Butterflies, bees, fireflies
and other creatures can move freely and thus make the park a paradise of
natural living things.
It is reported that the Beijing Olympics will be the first to conduct
innocuous disposal of all kinds of industrial and domestic garbage. On
the construction sites, wastewater will have to be reclaimed. Sanitary
landfills will also be established. Used batteries and ink cartridges
will be reclaimed in designated places. Domestic garbage will be
subjected to classification and harmless treatment.
Where there exists people, there exists garbage. During the Sidney
Olympics, 80% of garbage were recycled, and the Olympic Forest Park in
Beijing will reach a garbage-recycling rate of 90%.
How will this be realized? After the garbage in the park is classified,
10% of the inorganic rubbish will be transported to other disposal
stations, and the rest reproduced as organic fertilizers for plants in
the park. In this way, the garbage problem can be solved by the park
itself.

Xixi National Wetland Park of Hangzhou City first promoted a leisure
tourist activity called "fisherman tour" on June 6. Each galley can
accommodate two to six passengers plus one fisherman and one boatman, who
offer considerate services to tourists. While appreciating the beautiful
scenery that features the watery region in south Yangtze Delta presented
by the unique Xixi wetlands, travelers can experience in person five
fishing activities, namely using the shrimp cage, lobster cage, silk
screen, soft-shelled turtle hook and casting a net under the guidance of
the fisherman. In this way, they can feel and know about the joy of a
good harvest as the fishermen do.

China, US launch cooperation for IPR protection

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-26 14:31:27

Chinanews, Beijing, May 26 (By Ruan Yulin) - The Customs General
Administration of China (CGAC) and the United States Trade and
Development Agency (USTDA) hosted the signing ceremony for the
cooperation item on the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR)
in Beijing on the 25th. CGAC Deputy Director Sun Songpu and USTDA
Director Themla Askey executed the relevant agreement on behalf of their
respective government.
Based on arrangements for the cooperation item, relevant departments of
both governments will send IPR experts to make systematic presentations
to the management of China Customs and the frontline customs officials
regarding the relevant international IPR protection regulations, as well
as the laws and regulations for IPR protection, professional knowledge on
IPR protection at the customs area, and specific measures and
implementation experience from the United States, China and other major
countries Delegates from the commercial sectors will also have the chance
to open direct dialogues with China Customs officials about IPR frontier
protection issues for specific products.
Ms Askey recognized China Customs' efforts in IPR protection, and she
believed that the prospects for the cooperation between USTDA and China
Customs in the area of IPR protection are very bright.
The project is a further cooperation between the two countries following
the successful launch of the "Customs modernization capacity construction
project" in 2003 and 2004. In the "Customs modernization capacity
construction project", China and the US undertook a series of activities
including policy feasibility studies, personnel training and dialogues
with the commercial sector.

Anti-dumping duties imposed on imported food additives

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-13 17:20:44

(Source: Xinhua)

May 13 - China has imposed anti-dumping duties on nucleotide-type food
additives imported from Japan and the Republic of Korea.
The move came after the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) decided the import of
the products constituted dumping and damaged Chinese relevant industries.
The duties ranging from 25 to 119 percent will last five years and cover
Disodium 5-Inosinate, Disodium 5-Guanylate and Disodium 5-Ribonucleotide,
said an MOC circular released here on Friday.
The Ministry has required importers to pay the duties to customs offices.
Nucleotide-type food additives are mainly used to improve the flavor of
dressings such as soy sauce and monosodium glutamate.
