China, US launch cooperation for IPR protection

Chinanews, Beijing, May 26 (By Ruan Yulin) - The Customs General
Administration of China (CGAC) and the United States Trade and
Development Agency (USTDA) hosted the signing ceremony for the
cooperation item on the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR)
in Beijing on the 25th. CGAC Deputy Director Sun Songpu and USTDA
Director Themla Askey executed the relevant agreement on behalf of their
respective government.
Based on arrangements for the cooperation item, relevant departments of
both governments will send IPR experts to make systematic presentations
to the management of China Customs and the frontline customs officials
regarding the relevant international IPR protection regulations, as well
as the laws and regulations for IPR protection, professional knowledge on
IPR protection at the customs area, and specific measures and
implementation experience from the United States, China and other major
countries Delegates from the commercial sectors will also have the chance
to open direct dialogues with China Customs officials about IPR frontier
protection issues for specific products.
Ms Askey recognized China Customs' efforts in IPR protection, and she
believed that the prospects for the cooperation between USTDA and China
Customs in the area of IPR protection are very bright.
The project is a further cooperation between the two countries following
the successful launch of the "Customs modernization capacity construction
project" in 2003 and 2004. In the "Customs modernization capacity
construction project", China and the US undertook a series of activities
including policy feasibility studies, personnel training and dialogues
with the commercial sector.
